Why The Edge left Substack
The Edge is finally back online after three days of panic.
It began with a desire to add an editor@ email address to The Edge.
All seemed well. There was an exchange of money, a new password, and an email that was now part of the online paper, but which still needed to be added to the mysterious "DNS". I don't even know what that stands for, but no worries, just follow the instructions...
Then the ghouls of online publishing Hell were released and The Edge crashed.
One dozen "chats" with the tech support from the two companies implicated, one of which was Substack, and things only kept getting worse.
The take-away for me was that in addition to AI taking our jobs, there will be no functionality to anything we have paid for. The AI bots will continue sailing along in their world of arrogance, smugly believing they have all the answers, and that they have correctly answered your question, even though they did not.
Ultimately, it was a human being who solved the problem, but because the problem began with no one knowing which way the DNS (address info for any website) was supposed to point, and the bots didn't help us discover, the answer, we just took the platform down and started over.
Will you, The Edge subscribers, see a difference? Not really. The new template is taking me a little getting time to get used to, but I expect to come up to speed quickly. If you have comments about the changes, feel free to contact me: editor@theedgebereaky.com (and because I don't know how to link that yet, you will have to cut and paste it).
I was going to have to split anyway. The mighty Substack platform takes 10 percent of the publishers' income.
I am attempting to make a living from my efforts here at The Edge, and ten percent starts to add ups quickly if you start succeeding on its platform.
Looking forward to stepping up our offerings now that we've got a robust platform with great tech support. Coming next month is a podcast, more features, and special events!
