Chipping sparrows are perhaps the most common and familiar sparrow. They have a crisp, clean, cute look that inspired Warner Bros. to create Chipper, an animated sparrow as a rival to Tweetie Bird. Chipping sparrows were named for their sharp, rapid, trill of mechanical-sounding chips that is one of the highest-pitched birdsongs in North America.

Chipping sparrows breed here, making rather flimsy nests of grasses in low shrubs. They often line their nests with animal hair, and according to the Audubon Society, would line their nests with horsehair in the days when horses were more prevalent in our towns.
