Not all “red birds” are cardinals. If you see a red bird without a crest or black face markings, it may be a summer tanager. Summer tanagers—the only totally red bird in North America—breed in Kentucky. Nicknamed “bee birds,” summer tanagers often catch bees and wasps in mid-air and then rub the insects against tree branches to remove their stingers before eating them.
