High voter turn-out upsets Fiscal Court, reaffirms Richmond incumbents
Local primary election results
COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE—Unexpectedly high voter turnout propelled local challengers to win big in Tuesday night's primary election. Donna Agee for Judge Executive pulled the largest victory margin of the night, unseating incumbent Reagan Taylor, who has held the seat since 2015. When she takes office in November, Agee will be the first woman in Madison County history to hold the seat. Richmond's incumbents fared well, meanwhile.
By night's end, tallies showed that 24.38% of eligible voters in the county had cast their ballots, nearly 5% more voters than expected. County Clerk Kenny Barger told The Edge that even 20% of would have been considered a high voter-turn out. In all, 17,424 ballots were cast countywide. Barger also said that early voting has been steadily trending upward over the past five years since it started. This year 6% of the total votes were cast during the early election held last Thursday through Saturday.
Barger said that while the County has not ever had to conduct a re-count, he expected there to be at least one this year since the returns for several Fiscal Court offices were extremely tight. Current tallies are unofficial, pending any re-counts. Results must be certified by the state, and official vote totals will be announced Tuesday, May 26.
Several offices went unchallenged in this primary. These included the sheriff, coroner, county clerk, county attorney and property valuation administrator.
