Young barred owlets stay near the nest for several months and usually stay close to one another, often appearing playfully side by side. The owlets can’t fly for several weeks, but they can climb trees using their beaks and talons. In the process of moving from tree to tree, they flap and strengthen their wings for flight. Barred owls typically grow to be about 20 inches tall with an impressive wingspan of 3 and 4 feet! Once fully grown, the owlets generally establish their own territory within a few miles of the nest.
