Multiple agencies are on the hunt for armed robber who shot dead two Berea bank employees
'We know people are scared', State Trooper
BEREA CITY HALL—Kentucky State Police have confirmed two employees of US Bank in Berea were shot dead by an armed man. Authorities are not releasing the victims' names at this time.
Today at about 2:00PM, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to an armed robbery at the US Bank on Chestnut Street. As of 5:30PM, the suspect, who fled the scene on foot, is still at large. KSP says the suspect is armed and dangerous. The man is described by authorities as about 5'11 or 6 feet tall, "skinny", wearing a gray hoodie. There has been conflicting reports as to whether he is a white or black man.
KSP is urging residents to use caution and to immediately report any suspicious activity, keep doors locked, and to be vigilant.
In a media briefing, KSP Trooper Scottie Pennington told reporters gathered in front of City Hall, "Somebody's come into our town and hurt people in our community. A female victim, and a male victim. They were people who work in our community and now they are not with us."
Pennington said that the county sheriff's department, the Berea Police Department, KSP, and multiple federal agencies are collaborating on a man hunt at this time.
"The Berea Police Department were first on the scene," Pennington said, adding that helicopters and drones are being employed in the search for the suspect. "We are not 100% sure whether he has a vehicle," Pennington said. "He might have gotten on a Greyhound bus. We do not know at this time."
Area schools and Berea College were on lockdown this afternoon, along with City Hall and some area businesses. Pennington said all schools have been released by now. "They had to be picked up by their parents," he said. "We didn't let them go home in buses."
Footage from camera systems in neighborhood homes and businesses are currently under review, according to Pennington.
"We understand the citizens of Berea and Madison County are scared right now, and we're scared for them. These are our people. We want to do our best to find this person and bring him to justice," Pennington said.
No details were shared at the media briefing about what the robber might have taken when he fled, nor whether he was alone or had help with the heist.
"Bad things happen to good people, and today is one of those scenarios. These people just got up, went to work," Pennington said. "I'm so aggravated. We're sworn to protect our community and that is what we are going to do today."
This is a developing story. Please check back as more details are available. Another press conference with KSP is scheduled for later this evening.
